Recording industry in Spain will close a 2017 positive year once again, for the fourth consecutive year

Paid audio streaming services already surpass 1.5 million paying subscribers

PROMUSICAE has launched this morning the first assessment of the results of 2017, in the music recording industry in Spain. Meanwhile the definitive music sales ‘figures of the year are still being elaborated. First data indicate a year, which will close again with good results, for the fourth consecutive year, avoiding this way the expected decline, and the decrease of income, announced in the last September with the publication of the music sales’ figures of the first half of the year.


This change in tendency arrives thanks to the concentration of releases in the last quarter, the good performance of physical sales (with a moderate growth), and to the spectacular growth of the Premium subscribers; these Premium services in the streaming platforms already surpasses in Spain 1.5 million subscribers with regard to the one million announced one year ago. At the same time, published annual charts, showed in its different modalities, results with the most outstanding records of the year, in our country.

The best-selling records

Pablo Alboran from Malaga, Spain, has renewed in 2017 his romance with music fans in Spain, and put his fourth studio album, Prometo, as the best-selling record of the season. Alborán achieved this leadership with the additional merit of launching his album on 17th of November 2017 and, in consequence, he has only had one month to accumulate his sales volume. Following him, we find the favorite artists of the Spanish consumers as Joaquin Sabina, El Barrio, Alejandro Sanz, Vanessa Martin and Melendi.

Regarding the Digital Songs Chart, Despacito, Luis Fonsi’s song adds a new number 1 to his successful global music career surpassing Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You. It is the opposite to the number of radio broadcasts, where this very title of the British ginger passes the Puerto Rican’ success. Sheeran tops the streaming album chart with Divide, the most played record worldwide in 2017. On her side, Malú remains on the top of the DVD’s chart bestselling of the year, being 56 weeks on the chart with her documental film, Malú, Ni un paso atrás.

Alborán is again the king of the Spanish phonographic market. After leading the Sales Charts in 2014 with Terral, the melodic artist, he passed the baton to Alejandro Sanz (2015) and Manuel Carrasco (2016). However, the return of the author of Solamente Tú with Prometo has rewarding him to be the only capable to sell more than the 100, 000 copies. Close to this sales figure he follows him, Joaquin Sabina, who returned with strength in spring with Lo niego todo, his first collection of new songs in seven years.

The success of the Andalusian singer furthermore confirms a tendency of the Spanish phonographic market for more than two decades: the outstanding majority of local or Spanish-speaking artists on the top of the charts.

Regarding 2017, only two records sung in English (Ed Sheeran’s Divide and the La La Land’s original soundtrack); have achieved very good positions on the Top 20, on the seventh and ninth positions, respectively. The other favorite 18 artists for consumers are, without exception, Spanish artists.

After Alborán, the most popular are, in that order, Joaquin Sabina (Lo niego todo), El Barrio (Las costuras del alma, with almost 60,000 sold records), Alejandro Sanz (fourth position in only three weeks of sales of his live album, + Es +: El concierto), Vanessa Martin (Munay) and Melendi (Quítate las gafas). The eight position is for Manuel Carrasco, who accumulates 104 weeks on the sales charts with Bailar el viento. Following him: David Bisbal (Hijos del mar), Sergio Dalma (Via Dalma III), and Vetusta Morla (Mismo sitio, distinto lugar), on position number 12 with only 7 weeks on the sales’ charts.

We also believe there is merit in the example of Pablo Lopez, whose album Camino, fuego y Libertad has achieved to be in the position number 13 in only two weeks of life. He is followed by Fito y Fitipaldis (Fitografia), Sweet California (3), Bunbury (Expectativas), Antonio Jose (A un milimetro de ti), India Martinez (Te cuento un secreto), Manolo Garcia (Todo es Ahora. En Directo) and the teenagers’ duo Gemeliers with Gracias. On the following 20 positions, led by Shakira (number position 21, thanks to El Dorado), English speaking artists are still scarce. The only can be found U2 (position 22 with Songs of Experience, released in December), Bruno Mars and his 24 Magik (position 24), Depeche Mode (Spirit, in position 30), Harry Styles debuted with a self-titled solo album (33),  the last throes of Rolling Stones, Blue&Lonesome (35) and, Metallica returns with Hardwired to self-destruct (37). Altogether, 8 records in English and 32 in Spanish. The television phenomenon Operación Triunfo 2017 can be found in position 23 thanks to the best songs performed in the tv program (OT 2017. Lo mejor 1ª Parte).

The new Top 100 of albums in streaming

The summary published today highlights the works of emerging artists, from Taburete (Dr. Charas) to Ozuna (Odisea), Beret (Ineditos), Demarco Flamenco (Uno) o Txarango (El cor de la terra), among others. They are some examples of the visibility acquired in the new classification established by PROMUSICAE, counting the complete albums more played by the most important paid music services ‘subscribers.

A modality that only during the first semester of 2017 already grew 41% continues increasing thanks to the diversity of consumers’ offers, from special family plans to accounts for students half the price. The Streaming Albums’ Top Chart, which PROMUSICAE launched in October, gives importance to the consumption of new users and complements the information included on the traditional physical albums’ chart.

The song Despacito sweeps through the digital chart

As usual, the classification of those songs more demanded on a digital version, by streaming or downloading, represents a more oriented tendency to the dance floor music. And Despacito shines in this particular universe of music, a song born just a year ago and which has beaten, among others, the record of views of its video, which confirms its unquestionable latin global’ s success and the year’s viral phenomenon.

Also the outstanding success of Luis Fonsi with Daddy Yankee surpass half a million of copies in our country, well above the worthty 349,000 copies accumulated by Ed Sheeran with the single he has returned, Shape of you.

Contagious rhythms and light and sexy sounds songs are the most preferred online, in such a way, Me rehuso, de Danny Ocean, wins the bronze medal, meanwhile the Top 10 is completed with other very popular songs in these last months for entertainment: Felices los cuatro (Maluma), Subeme la radio (Enrique Iglesias), El amante (Nicky Jam), Reggaeton lento (Bailemos), (Cnco), Nacho and his Bailame, J Balvin and Willy William with Mi gente, up to Escapate conmigo, which sign both Wisin and Ozuna.

Regarding the total amount of the year, the number of plays in streaming of the more popular 200 songs, surpasses the 3,500 million, which represents 25% more than the previous year.

Music radio

Things change when talking about radio broadcasts, where Shape of You is in the first place, ahead of Despacito, although in this case for a minimum difference. The radio chart is the only one in which foreign artists are granted with better improve their ranking, mainly within the male commercial pop. In this way, Something just like this, the great hit shared by The Chainsmokers with Coldplay, goes up to the number 3, meanwhile the young Charlie Puth reaches to number 4 with Attention and James Blunt recuperates together with Robin Schulz past glories thanks to OK, in the number 5.

This 2017 Top 10 is completed with the happy Yo contigo, tu conmigo, which reaches position number 7 and Neiked (Sexual), Kateo (Way down we go) and Julia Michaels (Issues) complete the honor positions in radio preferences of Spanish fans.
