Recording industry publishes world 2013 figures

01-04-2014

The recording industry worldwide has published today the most relevant 2013 figures with the new edition of Recording industry in numbers (RIN), the annual report produced by IFPI to draw a numerical map of the sector around the globe. The new edition, which will have a Spanish version later on this month, paints a changing but encouraging picture: clear consolidation of streaming and the growing digital market which already accounts for a majority of sales compared to physical market in 8 out of 20 top world markets. However, Spain remains far from these good prospects and shows discouraging figures for the physical market and worrying statistics for a digital market with signs of stagnation.

Frances Moore, chief executive of IFPI wants to take a positive view of final figures for 2013. “The broad picture that emerges is of an extremely diverse industry.  Most of our major markets have stabilised, digital continues to grow, revenue streams have diversified and we are starting to deliver on the huge potential in emerging markets. Against this, there were sharply declining revenues in Japan, a market which accounts for more than one-fifth of global revenues and is right at the start of its digital transition.  Yet the difficulties in one market, however large, should not divert us from a broader story of digital opportunity.”
